Not that it's at all surprising for me but I've been watching a whole lot of West Wing (on DVD, obviously) over the last few days. The Communications Director Toby Ziegler (after whom my beloved dog is named) made an observation that captures really well how I feel about Senator Obama. Here's what he said:
"We don't know what the next President is going to face. If we choose someone with vision, someone with guts, someone with gravitas... someone who is connected to other people's lives and cares about making them better.... if we choose someone to inspire us, we'll be able to face what comes our way and achieve things we can't imagine yet. Instead of telling people who's the most qualified, who's got the better ideas, let's make it obvious. It's going to be hard... but we can do what's hard." --West Wing, Season 4, Episode 1
That's how I feel about Senator Obama. While I think he has fleshed out more policy stances than the media would lead you believe, there's an X factor in choosing a President. We haven't had the opportunity to choose someone who not only is brilliant (Senator Clinton), experienced (John McCain), and, well, Mormon (Mittens Romney), we have the chance to choose someone who will inspire our country in a way we desperately need. With an uncertain economy, spiraling health care costs, and an always-looming threat from many who want to kill us, we not only need policy changes but we need someone who can inspire us and create the coalitions to get those changes done. I really think Senator Obama is that candidate.
